Montescudaio
Montescudaio is situated in Val di Cecina,
its communal territory extends at the beginning from the
top of a fine hill of the shoreline plain. The first
nucleus of Montescudaio was formed around to a
monastero of Benedictine nuns, founded in the 1091 from
conte the Gherardo of the Gherardesca.
The dominion of this territory until 1405 has been
entrusted to the republic of Pisa, when later on it
passed to Florence. In the course of contesa between
Florence and the reign of Naples Montescudaio it
was conquered in the 1447 from king Alfonso of Aragon,
with which the Arrigo had formed an alliance conte, and
towards the end of XV the century from the troops
skullcaps and Neapolitans during the war triggered from
Pope Sisto IV and Ferdinand of Aragon. In the past the
local economy was based on the products of the forests (cedui
and high stalk) that they covered good part of the
territory, on the cultivation of grain, vineyards and
olive groves and on the breeding of bovines and ovine,
rendered possible from the presence of natural pastures.
In last 20 years the agricultural activities they
have endured a drastic reorganization but in the common
lower part of, the adjacent one with Cecina, industrial
zone with operating enterprises in the fields has been
developed one alimentary, of the apparel, the skins and
footwear, the shipbuilding small, the wood. The
commercial field, that currently it is extended, counts
on some companies that they wholesale practice of
alimentary products, fishes, druggist and benefits of a
not secondary contribution of the tourism.
